The Founding of Orion

Orion was founded on May 18, 1957, by Sosei Gushiken with a capital investment of 50 million yen. Driven by a passionate commitment to help rebuild Okinawa’s economy and society after the war, Mr. Gushiken established the company, laying the foundation for what would grow into one of the leading enterprises in the region.

The Story Behind the Name Orion

The name Orion was chosen through a public naming contest for the company’s flagship beer. The contest was announced in the newspapers on November 1, 1957, offering generous prizes: 10,000 yen (approximately $83.40) for first place, 3,000 yen ($25) for second place, and 2,000 yen ($16.70) for third place. The contest sparked incredible enthusiasm, with over 2,500 entries and 823 suggestions. After screening 810 of the names, Orion was selected due to its deep connection to Okinawa and its strong consumer appeal.

The name Orion itself was inspired by the famous constellation, which can be seen in the southern skies, mirroring the spirit of Okinawa’s southern islands. Stars symbolize dreams and aspirations, reflecting the hope and ambition for a brighter future. Additionally, at the time, the U.S. forces in Okinawa used a three-star emblem, further influencing the choice. The combination of these factors made Orion the perfect name to represent the company’s vision and its commitment to growth and progress.

About Logo Mark

The logo of Orion features an O that is intentionally designed as an incomplete circle. This symbolizes our ongoing journey to pursue our ideals and complete the circle. At the center, the i represents a person, with the circular shape of the head symbolizing wholeness, as well as the vibrant southern sun. This logo embodies a forward-thinking company that grows through unity, always striving toward completeness.

Our two corporate colors reflect the essence of Okinawa. Orion Blue is inspired by the sea and sky, symbolizing harmony with nature while representing water, freshness, and purity. Orion Red, on the other hand, reflects the powerful southern sun, embodying our burning passion, energy, and commitment to solidarity.

Sustainability

At Orion, contributing to the local community is a core part of our management philosophy. We are deeply committed to giving back to the community that has supported us throughout our journey. One of our highlights is the Orion Beer Fest, one of Japan’s largest and most beloved beer festivals. We also sponsor sporting events, local festivals, arts festivals, and other community activities. Looking ahead, we will continue to support the growth of Okinawa’s traditional arts and culture, working alongside the local community to promote positive initiatives that bring joy and inspiration to the region.
